I'm in the market for a sink bridge, as it seems like one would make sharpening quicker, easier, and less messy. This Tojiro Sink Bridge sounds like the gold standard. This Henckles/Kramer model certainly doesn't look as easy to adjust, but has anyone here used it? I'd worry about it flexing and moving around.

So a little more digging makes me think I'll just bite the bullet, and get the Tojiro.

I have the Naniwa sink bridge, and it works fine for half the price.

I want something adjustable and really stable. Something I can tension into place over the sink. That, and I don't want to make it.

I've Z-Kramer sink bridge, very strudy & well made, no flex! it can also use double as a stone holder. I pay only $25 for it on sur la table's black friday special sale + 15% off coupon.

How about that super duper sink bridge that Dave was looking into arranging a group buy?

I'm not sure but I think that project didn't make it to light of day. It looks like an AWESOME sink bridge but the price was just too high to fly. :(

I use a piece of cedar that I put some cleats on the underside to keep it in place on my sink.

Yowza! Very nice, but the cedar plank with paper towel option is starting to look attractive. Plus, projects help justify buying more tools.

That does look promising. Especially since I have cedar at my dad's...

It is really just a couple screws- I cut a full length piece as the stop rather than 2 separate cleats. Not better -just simpler.

I'm happy to make my own things and work on stuff around the house. I made new feet for our cedar chest when three of them were destroyed by the movers. It was time consuming with just hand tools, though. I like nice, shiny things, and the simplicity of placing an order online often gets me. I'd rather buy the tools, which we do actually need, and start making my own things, like this sink bridge.

As an aside, a coworker wants me to teach him to sharpen his Wustofs with water stones. Sounds like we'll be making him a bridge too once he buys some water stones. I told him we could get rid of half the bolster on his knives once I get a belt grinder. :k

I made my cedar sink bridge last night. It looks similar to Paradox's, as does my sink, but I went with Jim's design for simplicity's sake. I was itching to try it out, so I stayed up late sharpening knives. This thing really makes life easier! I'm much more likely to use my water stones now.

Thanks for the tips and info everyone!

  19. As an alternative to the paper towel to keep the stone from slipping - pick up a silicone pot holder. Easily cut to size if/as needed.

I have also been playing with one of the flat stretchy silicone things designed as bowl covers or microwaveable dish covers. Don't find them very useful as bowl covers but they are nice for keeping a stone from sliding.
