im in the market for one, something not much bigger then my palm "pocketable" maybe aroumd 5", mostly it will get used walking the dog, wouldn't mind one of them lumen blasting defence type ones as 800 or so of them to the eyes under dark skies can be helpfull if something ever came up.

flashlights have change a lot since my last one, and im not real sure which brands to look at

I have a cheapie I got off woot.com for seven dollars. It is great for fitting in my jacket pocket. I have a couple other ones just laying around the house. Need a few more for my Jeep and knife roll.

While not an expert by any means I have found a couple of things out that may or not be helpful to you James.

RCR123a rather than AA driven lights are worth the little extra effort for the extra brightness and run time.
Size does(not) matter. After a couple hundred lumens you are reaching the limits that a nickle sized reflector can utilize, if you need more than that you need a larger reflector.
Keep it simple, a couple of levels of light is what you will use 99% of the time.
No matter how careful you are- you will buy more flashlights then you need after the first one.

I have one of the small machined black aluminum cop lights that came out before the advent of high-zoot LED lights. It is has a lithium battery that is expensive but lasts a very long time. It is not rechargeable. I use it in work and find that with the long neck lanyard it is very useful. It is immediately accessible, but if you don't want it on constantly it hangs at the ready. Features I like is the ability to select between momentary on while holding the switch and constant on. It is achieved in my light by screwing down the end cap. I tried out one of the high output Cree LED lights and I do like it. Know that most of the bright ones use a 3.7 volt LIon battery which will take a different charger than what we are used. A feature that I do not think is very useful and somewhat annoying is the varying brightnesses and strobe feature. The ones I've seen you step through the brightness, so that if you use it on bright, the next time you use it, it will advance to dim, or some other setting than the last time and to get it back to bright you have to step through a strobe setting. I think it is someones bright idea (hehe) that didn't pan out. In electronics, it is easy to do these things, but just because they can, doesn't mean they should. one more humble opinion for the record books.

If you can find a AA single battery light that isn't regulated on high, you can put a 3.7 volt 14500 battery in it and drive it just like a cr123 light. I did that with my 4sevens mini AA and love it. The plus is, I can use any AA battery as a back up but I lose about half the output on high. My light, with the 14500 upgrade, puts out around 250 lumens. On a regular AA it puts out around 120.

I have this quark mini 123 and really like it. Learned about at the other forum from Eamon. Has a setting low enough to not wake anybody. Also disappears into that tiny fifth pocket on jeans. Super bright when you want it to be. image.jpg

lol i pulled the trigger on an eagletac d25c along with a rcr123 and charger... and trying not to look at 18650 lights now lol... just one light... just one light... just one more light... wait, something went wrong there

  19. I carry and strongly recommend the HDS Systems EDC rotary. Overengineered and overbuilt in Tucson by a one man operation. They have almost become a cult item. Now you have picked up the Eagletac to satisfy the immediate urge you might not mind the year long wait for the HDS.

    Cheers,

    Rick
