just a heads up, you generally don't give knives or sharp objects as gifts in chinese culture. It symbolizes you want to cut or severe the relationship.

  3. One of my French suppliers told me that the French feel the same way. When gifting a knife in France it was traditional to include a coin in the package. The recepient gave you back the coin, thus purchasing the knife.

I got my dad a Spyderco many years ago. He rarely uses it. He thinks it is too nice of a knife. I got him chef knife years ago and he uses it all the time. I got a steelhead sized filet knife from Alaska Knife Company(I think that is the name). He enjoys it. It has made many trips to the rivers.

His other knives are adequate for what they do. I got him a nice shirt this year ;)

ya its the same in chinese culture, if your good friends with the person your gifting the knife too, you sell it to them for $1 therefor making it a purchase not a gift. I'd still wouldn't recommend giving them as gifts to business partners or in-laws though.

if all that were true i would have a lot more knives

  7. IIRC in the US gifted knives had a penny taped to them. The person receiving the knives used it to "pay" for them.

That's why Masakage puts a coin on their knives.

I would risk it to get a new Masakage (cash is good too)

This was a knife for Father's Day/Dad's birthday. I was visiting family last week, so I gave it to him then. He loves it, but he looked unsure about using it, for now. I get that way about nice, new things too, though. Then I get over it.

My dad retires later this year, and I'm hoping he takes up cooking. He enjoys America's Test Kitchen, anyway, so I thought it might be a good gift. Hopefully it inspires him.

MattS made the handle, and I think it's gorgeous! It's cobalt mokume and ironwood. Steel is 19C27.

Thanks, Jim. As you know, I was very excited about this gift. I'm certainly no expert, but I've read that's a good stainless steel.

I think so. I don't read Japanese (box and included paperwork), and I don't think Matt mentioned the brand. I trusted him when he said it was a good knife, and it seems to be just that.
