favorite hot sauce

There's a couple I particularly like including Marie Sharp's and Moloka'i, but I love bringing this one out.

This is my favourite at the moment, 'Evil One' from Grim Reaper Food in the UK, pretty hot but a nice flavour.

 

Hot sauce? I don't even like pepper.

 

I have tried many but franks does it for me day in and day out...it goes on everything

 

I keep a big bottle of Frank's in stock. My kid's favorite. I couldn't resist that pictured bottle years ago. I have another rated at 1,000,000 scoville units. Inedible, but novel, like the one in the picture.

 

I remember once in my younger days I woke up at a friends house with really intense heartburn. He found me in the morning sitting at his kitchen table with a glass of milk and started laughing at me. I said that pizza last night is getting to me. I had no memory of putting an entire bottle of Tobasco sauce all over the pizza, which he informed me after his fit of laughter. Apparently I was feeling tough that night.

Why he didn't stop me knowing that I absolutely hate hot/spicy foods I don't know. That's just cruel I say.

 

I'm a Frank's guy, as well, but we had some really nice stuff in Chicago a while back, made by "Hot Sauce Boss". He was a funny guy who sold it on the street, and I grabbed some just because I liked the name. Turned out to be damned good. BUT, Frank's is ALWAYS in stock at our house, an at the firehall.

 

those clever evil sounding hot sauces are usually all about the lable. For me, Crystal is the one. Great flavor, not killer hot, but just add more if you want it hotted up.

 

Depending on what I'm putting it on, Crystal, Tapatio or Sriracha.

 

Hey how dare you mock my evil labelled stuff I know what you mean though, they are usually just hot and nothing else, this one is actually really hot but tasty as well, nice hit of scotch bonnet with a hint of citrus, it actually has some nice flavours going on!

 

Crystal is delicious, though mild. My go to for some heat:

 

I've gone local mostly. There is a guy in the St. Paul Farmers' Market that sells small batch hot sauce called Lucky's. He has about 5 different types, but they have such a nice clean, fresh flavor. The Serrano with garlic is my favorite. Just enough heat that it goes in most soups, on most eggs, and on anything else that I want a bit more 'bite'.

For bloody marys I use Picka-peppa. Outside of that, even though it isn't a hot sauce, I have started to use Zingerman's Maresh Pepper flakes in place of liquid sauces. That stuff is really good.

Daves would kill me.

Hottest I get is the Chipotle Tabasco, plain old Cholula and Franks mixed with brown sugar for my wings.

 

Daves is stupid hot. I once added a few shakes to a bowl of beans, I swear it burned the skin on my teeth ( I know...but that's what it felt like)

 

I just buy whatever's not too expensive from the SE Asian grocery nearby. Hau Sanh is popular at the Viet shops around here and I think it's fine.

 

Franks + Pickapepper (roughly 4:1) and you're on your way to the best Wing sauce. Little this and little that and you're there.

 

No mocking Warren, it was a cleverly disguised respect! (or fear) I've been in shops that sell that stuff and find hundreds of different lables, almost all are in the same bottle and almost all have intimidating names and admonitions on them. the ones that I've tried have left me begging for mercy. For me when you get to the ghost pepper, scotch bonnet, carolina reaper, trinadad scorpian etc territory the heat obscures the flavor and I get no enjoyment from it as well as a ruined meal. It is not that I don't like spicy food, I just want to be able to taste it. To each his own.

 

Just messing Mike I know exactly what you mean with some of the sauces with nuclear explosions etc on the label!! most are just hot and nothing else

 

I ruined a few meals with Dave's Insanity Sauce a while back, just too much for me to handle. Maybe it's old age, but I do not eat as hot anymore as I used to in my younger and wilder times. Maybe also because i don't have to proove my toughness anymore by destroying my taste buds Haven't even checkd out some of the local options, mostly use Sriracha.

That said: Is anybody making their own hot sauces? I would be surprised if we didn't have a few people here who do that. Any tips?

Salsa only here. My dad smokes jalepenos for me and it adds a great flavor.
