I would love to hear what lenses and settings people are using for knife/handle shots as i am dissapointed with the ones i have taken so far,i have not taken many close up/macro shots over the years so would be get some tips

  2. IMO it would be more productive if you posted some images of knives that you really like. So others could tell you how to shoot such images. Otherwise, you might end up with a bunch of pretty useless advices. For example, I use 12-50 kit lens, tripod and available light, but my setup wouldn't produce any bokeh that you can often spot on HHH knives images. So what works and good for me might not be what you are after.

Light and shadow are the tools that matter. If you take care of those, the metal/plastic/glass is not really something to be concerned about.

First day with a cheap macro lens. Have not done macro in a long time. Will take some getting used to, and need to do a better job cleaning up.

  5. Nice pic, macro is fun, but takes a lot of practice as I am finding out:)

Everything takes lots of practice in good photography. I was doing the shigefusa as part of a random set of makers' stamps with some water in order to get used to the lens. I took more but it's not really interesting enough to share.

    Those look pretty good, Jon.

Imma toss in two more from my admittedly banal makers' mark set:

Hehe, it's kind of the opposite, actually. Random dispersal with a spray bottle, then only remove drops (wick away with toilet paper or whatever) if they significantly obscure something. I initially used oil and water similar to like we do on human skin, but felt like a more "natural" look was achieved without the oil.

  14. Nice Jon!! What aperture did you settle on for these? looks a great balance with what's in sharp focus, if that's a crop I guess you were over 5 feet away or more with the 100mm macro?

With a 30mm macro, it's no surprise...little thing probably saw its own reflection.

  17. was thinking the same thing, he did well to get that close to the mini beastie!

A couple people have asked me about the Kato pic above. Other than cloning out a tiny black spot of lint from the blade and a minor brightness adjustment in curves, the pic is untouched. Camera color saturation setting was normal, so the desaturated look is natural.
