I think I can see Dante and Virgil climbing down that thing.

  3. Got my first full frame DSLR today, well it's not quite here but it's ordered and will arrive tomorrow.
Went for a Nikon D800 as I had a good try of one in a store, got this one lightly used from another reputable camera store, low shutter count and a 1 year warranty, great price as well, so a pretty good deal.
The Tamron macro lens I got recently will work great on it, just need a good prime lens and maybe a multi purpose with a bit of zoom range.
Will post my thoughts on it when I have had time to get used to it and have had a good play about with it.

  4. Had a quick walk about with the new Nikon D800 today, picked up a Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 VC lens as a general purpose bit of kit.
I have been looking at the Tamron and the Nikon 24-70 for a couple of days and tried them both out on a D800, I believe that in tests the Nikon is the slightly sharper lens but when I took a lot of shots and viewed them on a 20" screen I couldn't tell the difference and as I never have anything printed very large I decided to go for the Tamron as it was £400 cheaper and also has Vibration Control which will help with hand held shots in lower light.
If I was a pro or did large posters and relied on it for a living I may have gone with the Nikon.

A few hand held shots from today.

Not bad for the first few pics with the new kit, but plenty of room for improvement!!

  5. Damn, Warren! We are having an ugly mix of snow and mud everywhere these days and on your shots it looks like a middle of peaceful countryside summer.

  6. It was a nice clear morning and about 10°c, doesn't look quite so nice now, dark clouds forming so it looks like I went out at the right time!!

  8. There about a dozen in the field, not sure who owns them but they look healthy and well fed. Friendly as well, they are used to people feeding them carrots and stuff through the fence:D

  9. Very happy with the D800 and Tamron 42-70 f4 so far. Gave the auto focus a good try out today, had the settings on single point focus, very quick and accurate, doesn't have any issues locking on and keeps focus perfectly.
All the shots are hand held.

Managed to get this shot today, very pleased with it considering it was a quick hand held shot, it just leapt off the path into the river so no time to compose the shot or anything!!

I had the focus point on his eye and you can see me in the reflection, AF working great so far

Pleased with the kit so far, starting to get a feel for the settings as well. Time for more practice, practice and practice.

Yeah it isn't super smart to leave water sitting on the knives...oh well.

Sorry for the monotony, but another one from the set...kinda screwed up but still turned out alright...a bit like the knife itself.

And the Shōshin Sakura I've posted in other threads:

FWIW, I'm not doing color correction because I'm lazy and like how it looks without lots of editing.

I won't post any more of these repetitive shots here, sorry again!

Looks like Anton and I are on the same track, I use a Panasonic GH2 which is a mirrorless micro 4/3 format camera like the Olympus EM5. The Olympus 75/1.9 for this format is one of the finest lenses I ever used, still wanna cry that I had to sell mine just to pay rent...

Was replaced by a now moderately old Panasonic Lumix.

Never been 100% happy with the Panasonic. We've been talking about replacing it lately.

  16. Nice pics everyone:)
I have been looking at doing more wildlife stuff for a while, but trying to keep it within a decent budget.
After some research I decided to go down the AF-S 300mm f4 + 1.4 teleconverter route, seems to be a good way to get to 400mm without spending a fortune but also keeping image quality very high.
Both used items, but with warranties and from a reputable store.

Now all I need to do is sit silently in the woods for hours with a plant on my head waiting for the wildlife:D

  18. Funny you should say that!! I was out walking about the woods yesterday and there was a bird watcher on a little bridge with a very nice Swarovski spotting scope, he was taking pics through it with his iPhone 6, he said he attached it with a homemade fitting made from a plastic bottle top and a few other bits and pieces!! He didn't show me any images though:D

i would love a 400f4.5 or even a one that was really sharp wide open at 5.6f thought about the minolta 500f8 but so far my 70-200+2X is ok
i have 16-200 covered well but i really want something really long and another one that is utlra wide

  20. Yeah I would have loved a proper 400 or 500mm but they are way too expensive for my budget, maybe one day!
Even the new model Nikon 80-400mm was over budget at about £1500-1600 for a good used one!
