I have read many many times how fragile the steel is after quenching and must be treated like glass , I was shown couple proper ways to fix a bent knife after quenching . Anyway either way I was too lazy or got distracted , I decided to skip the vise and act like a big though guy and use my hands to straighten the blade . Here it is the funayuki before heat treatment

    Epic fail

Wow, that started out as a scary story. But it had a better ending than I was expecting. I'm talking about the part where you were using your hands. (There will be blood?) Nice save by the way.

I am lucky that I haven't hurt myself but bummed about my carelessness . The blade was bent towards left , I laid it on the counter , held the tip and started pulling the tang towards myself . After couple tries it look almost perfect then I said one more time and it should be done... Snap . I will post more pictures of the progress on the banno bunka . I still can't like the profile of it ...

It not always great finished pieces to show , this was a 250mm western gyuto forged from 52100, after heat treatment I went to brave to soon and also dropped on the floor with clamps attached

Should send to Jon :D, he fixed something like this not long ago

  14. Not only did he fix this... He did it in 15 mins flat! Impressive huh :)

  15. There's nothing a duct tape can't fix :)

Mert, I'm sorry about this particular knife, but it really awesome to see someone posting fail attempts. Most makers would tend to hide their mistakes and I really appreciate that you have the guts to share your experience.

I have forged another one but , it took about an hour , no powerhammer and tiny anvil makes it little too long

Anton I am still new at knifemaking and learning everyday , mostly from my mistakes and as you know not everything you start with great intensions turn great sometimes

I guess this isn't the way to make nakiris , It's the 3 rd knife that didn't make it for this custom order I have been working on , the owner couldn't be nicer about it ImageUploadedByTapatalk1430820306.763831.jpg

    I gotta start over , take 4

  19. God damn, Mert, what happened? I mean what's the reason for a blade to just snap into halves? Over hardening?

Straightening on anvil with hammer ( fully hardened 52100 blade , 3x tempered ) I had fixed the spine and I hit the edge 1 more time than I should have and ...
    Ping,
I knew the risks of it , Bill made it look so easy ha ha :D
