The knife pros have some serious gear for removing metal and wood. ;)

I have my uncles collection of twenty plus pipes, some really cool. Can old pipies be refurbished?

So for you gentlemen in the know, is there a noticeable difference in the type of briar or wood used in a pipes bowl. Does it affect the burn, quality of smoke, taste? Also are there preferred regions of the world that have higher quality, or more sought after woods?

Yup... but I have no idea where they come from as pipe dudes do not share their honey holes lol

Morocco and Italy typically. Then there is Meerschaum...

Briar is liked because it takes forever to burn a bowl out. Nice dense hard wood. Try other hard woods out. I know there are some on etsy that are non-briar. AND...

Typically the briar burl used for pipes comes from a heather bush that grows in the rocky cliffs around the Mediterranean Sea. The burl is then usually boiled before kiln drying, tthen aged in a low humidity controlled space for 7 years before being considered ready for use as a pipe. At least that's what I've read. I know high end pipe makers will travel to Italy or Greece to hand pick heir burls, as I'm sure curing treatments vary quite a bit from different suppliers. Cherrywood has been used for pipes for a long time, as well as pear and occasionally you'll see olive wood. None of these really compare to briar in heat resistance and durability, but are obviously easier to find and easier to carve.

I made this one. :) Hand tools only. Waiting on some wax to buff it up better.

I just found some fifteen year old Penzance in a locker at work, and had to give it a spin. Not bad. My first bowl in a loooooong time.

It would seem Jim will smoke just about anything, pipes, cigars, bacon, or a whole chicken, though im not sure how he fits it in the pipe
