While testing my new forge that my friend Chadd made ( Csmith knives ) I wanted to see how it did in forge welding temperatures and decided to make a small ni-mai ( kata-ha) billet . Originally wanted to do mioroshi deba but couldn't draw the billet long enough , so here it is
120 mm ajikiri deba( single bevel japanese small fish knife ) , Damascus clad with 52100 cutting edge . Handle is African Blackwood and blond buffao horn .

Brad , during the hand sanding the bevel got blended in bit and it's not very crisp as i liked . I have done a ura ushi sharpening too before etching , I will touch up again . This was a learning piece for me , I am thinking about sending to a local member who has lot more experience in single bevels than me to get feedback .

the bevel at the shinogi doesnt look that crisp. and the ura doesnt seem deep enough. but I like the fact that you are trying mert. the damascus work looks ************** beautiful. awesome work man!

Brad , I agree on both counts , shaping an ura without large contact wheels or curved platen is not easy and shinogi got blended in during hand sanding . Once I clear my customs list I may try another one but single bevels won't be my priority , especially considering japanese craftsman are almost impossible to beat for the price point in single bevels . I am not using them enough ( deba once a month , yanagiba 3-4times a year) to have strong preferences unlike double bevels . This was more of a test of forge welding and challenge of keeping the blade straight after heat treatment . Thanks for encouragements , by the way I haven't made that Damascus bar . I will be using one of the random pattern billets I made for .....
An integral gyuto :D very soon

i still use a suji the most, but I have a deeper love for my single bevels and treat them better than I do my sujis. they are my babies

I love my sujis more than gyutos and I am only using 1 knife at work for most tasks ( 280mm suji , 45mm tall that I made for myself , forged from 52100 )

I have spend too much time into this little guy to give up, I have ground the knife bit more to have more pronounced shinogi , did ura ushi sharpening and etched it again .

I love the combination of African Blackwood and blond horn , especially if you can match the grain . I will be refinishing the handle too since I ground it bit

Love that subtle damascus over the 52100! What a sweet looking knife.
