  1. Another Seiko arrived today!

    A nice Kinetic Sports 200 SKJ003P
    twins.JPG

I picked it up as it looked in slightly better condition than the one I already had.
New one on the left with it's twin and it's all blue brother SKP031P on the right.
    twins2.JPG

    Nice lume from it
    twins3.JPG

So it turns out they are not twins, the old one had a black dial and the new one has a blue dial
    twins4.JPG

So now I need to see if they made the pepsi version with different dials or one of them is modded, whatever the result it looks like I will be keeping them now as they are different:D

this was my dad's. Mom gave it to me years after he passed. had it serviced and still runs well. I believe it to be a mid to late 40's tank. should have used my cell phone and all those scratches wouldn't have shown.

  3. Nice watch, Mike, even more special as it was your dad's!
Looks like Art Deco styled so 1940's would be a good bet.
'Bulova Tuxedo' brings up a couple of similar cased watches on google, interesting stuff:)

Edit: A little more google fu brings up the 'Bulova Academy Award' watch, similar case but can't see one with that dial yet

    Thanks Warren.
My research was pre google from Cooksey Shugart and Richard Gilbert's complete guide to watches. I got my copy about 25 or 30 years ago. the exact watch was not shown, but close.

Wore this almost every day for the last 20 years. recently started failing to advance the date window. Probably cheaper to replace the movement than to fix it.
Hard to tell it is a Seiko Speedmaster like chronograph

  9. Cool watches, Mike! I do love the vintage stuff, but that's another rabbit hole I could get lost down:D
Trying to get the full set of those Seiko Kinetics Sports 200's, need the black bezel, silver bezel and the two tone, then we are on to the 2 titanium versions, a lot rarer and seem to go for around £900-£1000 for a nice condition one:eek:

Watches are a lot like cars. Most women have no clue what any of them are, and are never as impressed as the guys think they will be. All they typically attract are other like-minded guys. To me, they are something you get for yourself to enjoy, not for others to notice. Heh, kitchen knives probably fit into this catagory as well.

thanks. I was using them to test out a lens alleged macro ability. up close they look pretty ratty. Got em cheap and used them.

True for the kitchen knives. I just saw this in the comics this morning and thought it needed to be shared.

  14. Found my first Omega timepiece today!
Ok don't get too excited, it's a stopwatch and not a nice wristwatch:D but it's the first Omega piece that I have found whilst searching the local junk shops.

It's in nice shape and works perfectly, I am tempted the get the back open and have a look at the movement!

  15. That's a nice watch under those scratches, Mike. Is it a 7A38 caliber?

Gosh Warren, I don't know. I used to know, but I don't anymore.

have you looked into the "precisionist" or Accutron II watches? they run a high frequency oscillator (262khz) compared to the fairly standard 32khz in quartz watches. so that instead of one tick being a second, each tick is a 16th of a second with an appropriate gear train to divide each second marker into 16 tiny beats which visually yields a sweep smooth sweep second hand akin to the old tuning fork Accutrons.

  17. Funnily enough, I was recently reading some info on the original Accutron v Speedmaster space race, interesting stuff. The Precisionist range does have some nice models.

New member to the family, a Seiko SKA293 'Big Boss'

Mike, I can see your eye starting to twitch at the 'cartoon' size of it:D

    boss.jpg

Pic of it next to my SKA371 'BFK', the BFK isn't a small watch but the case on the Boss is pretty large!

If memory serves, Omar Bradley(Normandy Offensive) was the president of Bulova when Accutron came to be and pulled some back room strings to get Accutron accepted for space.

I was just reading something about this that reminded me of this thread. Had no idea at the time what you were referring to.
Sounds like Bulova was trying to play the "American made" card which nearly backfired on them.
Came about this little history tidbit while checking out a '73 Omega Speedsonic f300. Seller posted a link. Not sure if it's ok posting same link but it's:

What had gotten me to research the Omega was the launch of this lovely gem.

Le Jour MarK 1. Really digging the classic barrel case throwback design.
