2016 Garden - Starting Early

Last year I made some mistakes like planting things too close together, soil too shallow in the beds and not staking/caging the tomatoes. But we still got tons of veggies out of the garden. This year I hope to have learned from my mistakes and should do better. I bought a chest freezer and they have a local farmers market if I have way too many tomatoes.

  2. I am insanely jealous of your yard size and the vege beds.

I could use some help with the mowing. Takes me anywhere from 4 to 6 hours.

What kind of riding mower is that? It doesn't even have a cup holder.

Time for a few more tomato beds.
2 truckloads of compost and more tomato plants. Mr Stripey, Lemon Boy, German Johnson, Indigo Blue, Mortgage Lifter and a few normal-ish varieties.

only thing green in my garden still is the peas we started inside and the onions and garlic hopping soon to see a few sprouts

It looks like it is warming up for you now. Time for stuff to start growing.

Our weather has been crazy. It hit 90 degrees F the other day. Normal temps top out in the upper 50s this time of year.

I just checked the forecast and it might freeze Sunday and Monday night.
I will be covering everything just in case.

I have everything planted in the garden now. But I see this when I check the forecast for tonight.

Hope those 'maters survive! It's silly here. The dogwoods are in full bloom, and I have roses. We usually don't have roses until June at the earliest.

Right now the garden looks like a tent city of homeless people.

Next year I will make the beds permanent and have hoops so I can make them into mini greenhouses until the weather is warmer.

Like Lucretia, the flowers seem to be starting early. Roses have buds and there are iris blooms all over the place.

Yeah, the irises are going mad. A tie dye one that smells like grape koolaid and pixie stix:

We usually don't have roses until June or July:

And the dogwoods are beautiful this year:

I miss dogwoods, it's to hot for them here, but the house I grew up in had a giant dogwood tree right outside our living room window.
