  1. I thought it would be a cool idea if we can share some info about ourselves.

So, I work in IT. My current toy is an anova. Gotten into knives as I got sick of my dull ones. Didn't know about the dishwasher thing. Favourite food is Japanese, cause I like the clean flavours. Based in Sydney, Australia. Oh and my wife is expecting on December.

I'll bite. Civil/ structural engineer. Just unboxed a VP112 over the weekend and am playing a bit with a Sansaire as well. Got into the kitchen knife thing because I was getting frustrated with my Wusthofs, which I had thought were the greatest knives in existence. That got me to ChefTalk, which pushed me to KF. I started with two Hiromotos, and then had Pierre Rodrigue make a trio of knives. And things just kept steamrolling from there. My wife and I both love to cook. We tend to prefer simple/rustic, so we lean towards Italian cuisine. But we try to branch out every now and then (Thai, middle-eastern, etc.). After we completed an addition/ kitchen renovation a couple years ago we started up a monthly cooking club, but that has been on hold recently since we have a 15-month old running around and taking up most of our leisure time. My wife has a pretty kick-butt herb garden, and also plants a ton of tomato plants, string beans, squash, peppers, etc. We've had some really beautiful salads the last couple nights thanks to the butter lettuce and spinach that has been growing.

  6. Ok might as well join in.
Gas/Heating engineer for the past 14 years, was doing building maintenance prior to that since I was old enough to work. Currently self-employed but might go back to stability of employment as some point.
Pretty normal story knife wise, bought a couple of Global's as I though they were the best things ever after reading all the sales hype, found the other KKF a few months ago and have got a few nicer knives now, first was a Hiromoto AS Santoku which I really like, then a HHH 240 AEB-L Gyuto and a Tanaka Petty with a nice handle by Anton:cool1
Wife is a social worker specialising in helping children at risk of harm or abuse, kind of puts other things in perspective when you hear some of the horrible stuff that goes on. I have 1 daughter from a previous relationship that lives with us, she is 17 already!! Time goes fast!! Might be our first on the way next year, the 18 year gap is a little scary though:eek:
Go fishing to relax and unwind, enjoy wildlife and the outdoors in general.
aaaaanyway I think that is quite enough for now:)

  7. That's funny, I am also an engineer. How often would you have an engineer who's into kitchen knives:)

  8. Think it comes from trying to have the best tools for the job, anything that makes the job easier and more enjoyable. Nothing worse than trying to do a job with crappy tools

More often than you would have thought :jump . Title at work for me is a research scientist, but I have some degrees in Engineering.

  10. Ok you are a proper engineer:D I just fix cookers, boilers and heating systems, although boilers are quite complicated now and you really need a laptop to fault find some of them, it's quite nice to see an older boiler sometimes as they are much easier to diagnose:)

  11. Dude you are more engineer than I am. I have a degree in "software engineering" I have not held a spanner professionally in my life :).

I thought as engineers our job was to tell others how to hold the spanners/ wrenches :D

Might as well join the engineer lovefest. Hubby's a Electrical Engineer. I spent most of my career as an Mechanical Engineer, ended up writing software.

  16. Maybe this should be called the kitchen knife and engineer's forum. My degree is in fine arts (industrial and packaging design). My husband spent 20 years in the USMC then got a degree in engineering. He designed motors for a mining machinery company. When he retired from that we started the cookware shop because it was something we both liked. We are obviously old farts.
