Hi : I enjoy reading other people's WIP so I decided to post mine. Also thought it would motivate me to do my best....

This is a 180 ish W2 gyuto that I've begun. This is just after heat treat-Quick grind to remove scale and check hamon. More to follow. Thx--Eric

image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg Handle shaped, sanded and oiled. Blade etched, but revealed some scratches so I need to go back and sand out, then sharpen.

You are all very kind. I was unhappy with the finish, so I went back and resanded , very hard once the handle is on!, and then re-etched. Much better and I learned a lot-particularly the need for patience and perseverance. Happy Memorial Day,!

Looking good! Just playing with hamon myself, once you've got a very high level of polish, try something like wa powder, I have 10,000g japanese wa powder from maxim, you may be able to get something similar from a pottery supply, like fine pumice or fine al/ox powder, or you can use the dry powder from a finishing natural stone/finger stone, anything high grit that brings out the contrast , really makes the hamon line shine, and brings out some details and contrast. Im sure there are other methods though.

Well....thank you. I must say this has been a very humbling and educational experience . It is one thing to do it with the help of someone like David Lisch , who saved my many mistakes, and to do it on your own. Like anything, I guess. Regardless, I appreciate the goodwill and tips ( thank you Will). I think I will do another knife after this one is finished.
