WIP Lacewood Sheath

Discussion in 'Handiwork Display' started by chefjeff.225, Jul 25, 2016.

  1. 20160720_135559.jpg Picked up a Shun Elite Santuko a few weeks ago off of Walmart.com, closed out from Williams Sonoma. I believe it listed for about $230, got it for $62. Not bad for a SG2 cored knife. Only three layers, outside sandblasted. I think it was a second or a demo, but it cleaned up nice. Had a small wave in the edge, straightened that out, and sharpened pretty thin. Decided it deserved a saya, had some lacewood laying around, slipped over to a local cabinet shop, had them split a board and run the interior surfaces through a planer. Cut the rough shape on my bandsaw, laid out the blade shape on one piece, and started carving with my pocket knife. Four hours later... Decided to inlay a couple of super magnets (NdFeB) with CA to hold the knife in. More later...

I like the super magnet idea. before I glued mine together, I used a small drill to punch through at the final dimension so I could see it after I glued it together. Then trimming was easier. I thought those were rfid chips at first so you could lojack your stolen knife.
