How do you beat the heat?

Stay by the pool all day? Cold beer in a fanny pack? Night owl? What’s your secret?

My job has me outside in all weather conditions on and off all day. In and out of brick buildings, walking on concrete and asphalt, up and down stairs (19 flights so far today). Needless to say....Summer time is HOT and SWEATY for me.

I have ice water with me all the time but sometimes that’s not enough.

I’m considering one of those cooling towels but are they worth it? Anyone here use one?
Also, maybe a fan that mists water?

    So what do y’all do?

I've used one of those neck bandanas when I work in the yard. It helps a bit, but I'm still hot.

I also wear Ex Officio breathable underwear that do a good job of reducing or eliminating chafing compared to cotton. I think Duluth Trading has a similar product. They make tee-shirts of the same material as well. The point is to let the sweat evaporate to cool your body.

According to this article, eating spicy food can help by making you sweat more easily.

Wear white or light colors if you can. Straw hat when you're in the sun helps a lot. If you don't mind looking like you slept in your shirt and can find one without breaking the bank, get a linen shirt--it'll breathe like nothing else does. A long-sleeve white linen shirt is cooler than a t-shirt, and provides a little protection from the sun. Run cold water on your wrists.

As far as the misting fan goes, it depends on the humidity where you are. Someplace really dry like Arizona they'd probably help. If it's humid where you are, not so much. The idea behind the mist is that the water changes from liquid to vapor, and absorbs a bunch of heat in the process. If there's a lot of humidity, the air is already packed with water vapor so it's harder for the droplets in the mist to change phase.

Take a week's vacation in the Philippines; when you get back to Tennessee, it won't seem humid at all.

Ahh yes. My friend is from the Philippines. He says from the moment you step off the plane you never stop sweating.

I just deal with it. Hats and neck protection is a must. But after that, I just grin and bear it. You eventually get used to it.
