Ever use a Burl for something not knife related?

I see all these gorgeous burls here and I'm wondering if they are good for anything else besides knife handles?

Ideas I've had for the finished burls:
    Pipe carving
    Wood pens
    Shaving brush handles
    Razor stands
    Desk pen holder
    Chess pieces
    And on and on

So are they strictly better suited for handles or has anyone used them for other projects?

  2. For smoking pipes root briar (erica arborea) is being used. Neutral by taste, heat resistant, light and easily processed. It won't be simple to find a burl that fulfills these requirements as well as root briar does.

  3. I've never used burl woods but, before I had my last 2 offspring I was becoming quite proficient at making pendants out of pieces of scrap wood with my dremel. If I decide to pick it up again I may give them a try.

Some of the top end, gazillion dollar, electric quitars are being made (partially) of burl.

If I could find some pieces large enough I have always wanted to make some burl shoe horns.

I've got a wall mirror that's a piece of maple burl from a tree with a rotted center. The person who made it cut off a slice, cleaned up the rot, mounted a mirror behind it, and now it's a mirror with a burl frame.

I want to have my reloaders rehandled. But it's not high on the list.

Around here we say "We have weird people, making weird things, with weird wood" and nobody seems to argue.

    Mr. Magnus,
That is an amazing finish you have on your items in the photo.
I understand the amount of work it takes to turn out that nice.
    Nice Work!

  16. Thank you. yes it takes some time but is worth it imo !

I'm planning on a trip down to Burl Source since I'm going to need a new knife rack. Thinking a nice big piece of burl would look great in my kitchen. Funny how getting a 320 Suji will cause you to have the need for a taller rack.

Lately some of my burl has been going to the E-Cigarette crowd to make vapor smoking things.
I don't know the correct name for them.
Don't want to use their photo without permission so here is a link.

  19. Those are weird. I didn't get too into that massive thread but I think it may be for the liquid fills. Wednesday will be 1 month without a cigarette for me. Couldn't have made it this far without an e-cig for those moments I want to strangle someone lol.

Glad to hear that, Erica, the public health community is behind you ;) Not for here, but e-cigarettes are an interesting topic, lots of discussions around them.

Mark, the burl bike is cool, some of the other things seem like wasted knife handle material to me ;) Reminds me of the time I accidentally went into a 'Country Store' deep in New England, almost had a panic attack, too much woodsy cuteness and plaid fabrics for a Bauhaus friend like myself. This would be my personal hell...
