O.k., here is the question: I don't have a TV or HBO. Should I watch the series streamed on my Ipad or - gasp - read the books? Are they written well?

You should watch the series Stefan. I really love Deanerys, queen of the dragons. Arya is ok, John Snow as well. I really "HATE!!!!!!" retarded king. Every time when I see him I want to throw something on him. I really would like to know English better, then I could tell you everything what I think about this small retarded bastard:) The series is really surprising. I think that 1 season was the best.

Only now, he has a bit of a deadline. Hopefully that will speed up the next book...

The books are amazing and worth the read if you plan on watching or not,

  10. I've only watched a few episodes here and there. The incest and brutality turned me off so I quit watching. My daughter and husband watch it though and my daughter loved the books.

I've read all the books, and look forward to the new series. I also don't have TV, but there is always a way these days...

Right now I am busy working my way through the latest series of Hannibal and Vikings.

M'lady and I watched the series and liked it. Then she read the books. It's alotta pages if you already know what's gonna happen. But she really enjoyed the books. She said they spend a good amount of time on the swords in the books too.

Yes to both. Absolutely read the books. I watched the first 3 seasons of the show first. Then read the books. I'm halfway through the latest book.

The show somewhat follows the books, but not dead accurate to the books. If you only watch the TV show you will grasp everything just fine. The TV show writers have done a great job telling the stories of all the charterers so people that have never read the books can understand backgrounds and what is going on. You will be on the edge of your seat and ready for more after each episode.

Likewise if you read the books you will be ready for the next chapter time and time again. The real difference between the TV show and the books is that the books go in to vast amounts of detail. Nothing is really speedy, he takes his time telling the story. If you have a good imagination then you'll find yourself reading until your eyes hurt. They are very well written and don't leave you wondering what this guy looked like or how that scene played out.

I can't say what I like best, the books or the show. IMO they don't compliment each other. You can read or you can watch and you'll understand everything perfectly either way.

They are different things. The books are very well written, if a bit lurid, and over-detailed in the way Tolkien is, but it has a richness and depth that few fantasy series do (with the exception of Wheel of Time, before Jordan lost the plot). The tv show is very well done, and just as lurid, but it's a little different. I read the books after watching the first season of the show. I'd watch the show first.

Thanks everyone. I am not a huge phantasy reader, but I am running out of mysteries to read, so I will give those a try after I am done with my current series. I saw a few episodes on a plane and thought it looks like some interesting, remotely Tolkienian if somewhat bloody entertainment. Probably should re-read Tolkien also at some point, I think I read those about 35 years ago... Maybe I will even have a TV by the time I am done with the books. Will need to get one for the soccer worldcup anyway :)
