Fujiwara FKD has a decent reputation for being decent entry knife.

Check out Bluewayjapan on ebay. He has tons of stuff!

I looked there had a few choice that may work

  4. Jon at JKI has a Gesshin stainless for $105. I'm in the same boat having just purchased one as a gift. Great knife and great customer service.

I've gifted a few Suisin Western Inox. Mom, sister, 2 gf and I usually have one on my rack. It's available in 180mm, a good looking knife, performs well, under $100. (Don't know about shipping to Canada) Korin stocks them, JKI can get them.

My standard gift for knives is a Suisin INOX Western from JKI. Out of stock right now from him, but I'd call him. My non expert opinion is it is the best bang for the buck for a gift.
