Scrap handles WIP project.

Discussion in 'Handiwork Display' started by Anton, Sep 17, 2014.

  1. It's been almost one year since I dived into handle making. God only knows how much good wood I turned into scrap and dust since then. I usually throw away most of scrap parts just because I haven't found any use for it, but lately I came up with idea that maybe I could also use it for handles.

Gonna try cutting them into squares and then glue that mosaic together. In the end there should be something like an end grain version of my coral handle prototype. Such handles might have a poor look or stability issues, but might end up pretty well. Will see. Since it's a scrap wood anyway, why not at least try :)

I'm gonna make some pictures in the process to add some fun to it. What ya think about it? Will it worth time or not? :)

  2. I'll be following along :D.

Like you said, leaving it scrap is useless...may as well make it useful!

  3. I will be watching too. Like the idea.

I am trying to be frugal and save wood scraps to use as ferrule etc but my pile is growing faster than I can use , I am really looking for this project Anton

  7. I'm so full of evil that I often buy pen blanks and turn them into handles :j

  8. Moar pictures!

    Here's the scrap.
The idea is to cut it into thin squares that would be glued together later. Thickness is in range from 3 to 18mm.

Some time wasted with band saw and here's what we got. A box of crap scrap.

Cocobolo, Bocote, Mango, Karelian Birch, Maple, Bubinga, African Blackwood, Walnut burl and some other species that I could hardly recognize.

Lacking any artistic taste I think of just randomly selecting pieces and glueing them together :BF

Also considering using vulcanized fiber spacers to add some drama (and because those are over the top already)

btw all that scrap above is going to be used for the main part of handles. Because I got another pile of longer scrap pieces that are suitable for ferrules.

Sounds like fun. I have a few boxes full of ferrule and spacer pieces myself... The one thing I would pay attention to is the grain direction of the woods. If unstabilized, they may still expand or shrink a bit, and you would want them to do that in the same directions.

  10. In a kitchen knife setting, what I use weird scraps for is a lengthwise laminate, ala Murray Carter. I haven't gathered enough scraps though to make it worthwhile. I also use them for scales on my EDC knives.

Great idea Anton. Can't wait to see how it will turn out.

I have zero creative ability but a fairly good memory for those that do.

On the other site someone (Mr Drinky?) used a bunch of cut-offs and other scraps to make children's blocks. Memory gets a little fuzzy here but I recall that in addition to the normal letters on the blocks they could also be used to show different woods, where they come from, etc.

And anyone that's seen it will likely not forget the saya that Knerd made that looked like a patchwork quilt of fine wood. (Chris - you still have a picture?) That pegged the coolmeter.

That saya was really cool, good memory

Bet you could make a killer chessboard if your pieces are big enough.

Yup & that scrap saya looks pretty darn good on my HHH 240mm production gyuto w/ stabilized Honduran rosewood scales w/ stainless pins.... WAAAAAAAAY cool! :)

Ha, this is cool. Funny, I have been thinking about doing something similar for a while now.

All the handle makers should do a few "scrap" handles and do a charity sell or something cool.
