Discussion in 'The Kitchen Knife' started by shownomarci, Jan 2, 2015.

  1. Obviously i'm talking about kitchen knife related ones.
I do like the ones with an informative bit and then a performance show.
    - CGuarin's videos are absolute favourite.
    - Like Shaun's videos as well, but man he likes talkin'. :)
    - Enjoy watching Rick's videos as well, just need to turn the volume down. :)
    - Find Richard Blaine's sharpening videos quite useful.
    - Korin Knives sharpening videos are worthwile watching as well.
    - And Jon's videos from JKI are very informative too.
    The ones i don't like:
    - unpacking/unboxing videos when they unwrap the stuff for ages then show it to camera from 628 angles and that's it or talks a lot for 10-15 mins and you're waiting when is he going to say something useful
    - papershredders... if i wanted to shred paper, i'll get a machine for that not a japanese kitchen knife, that's not real life situation
    - veg/fruit jugglers.... throwing stuff at the knife is not a real life situation either (I doubt that anyone would prep a meal by throwing stuff at the knife.)
    - ninjas... swingin' the bloody knife like a ninja to slice waterbottles or whatever in half just to demonstrate the sharpness (Kitchen knifes are tools not toys, do not swing them like a ninja. Doesn't mean you can't have fun with them by chopping food on a board.)
    - slow motion cutters... Peple without any cutting skills but with a japanese knife attempting to cut something. I have to admit i do even cover my eyes, or just skip the video before they hurt themselves.
    - wannabe speed choppers... They have seen videos where people have done it, found it cool, so they wanted to do it as well. Even worse than the previous guys and more dangerous. That's why most of the domestic kitchen accidents happen.
    Borderlining between good and bad:
    - "Mr. Woodpecker"... Guy with a big knife shreds anything with the speed of the light in 30 sec - 1 min, job (video) done. I bet his motto is: "Let the knife do the knocking." :) A chef who likes his knives ad knows how to use them. (That's ok, we're a all a bit like him.) His videos are a bit like a porn without any story. Mind you he started talkin' lately, so gettin' better.
    - The guy who is making those short knife reviews. Just plain boring. Just pause them at the beginning, read the info sheet myself, then skip the rest.
Is there anything i have missed out? :)

If we are talking about YouTube then I avoid it as much as I can. There are few videos there that I can watch. What I very much dislike are the videos that are 20 minutes of talking and 2 minutes of actual instruction.
I can listen if you are feeding me useful information. Otherwise I zone out, skip through it, or just find something else.
