Started with the knife second from the left.

    Lots of gunk...

Got the handle off and started cleaning.

Now to shape and start the handle. Resin injected Buckeye scales.

I'll work on it when I can. Only have hand tools at the moment. Kind of thinking of hiding the tang since it was a partial tang to begin with.
Want to think the black a little also.

Looking good. How did you clean it?

Baking soda, lemon juice and a green scotchbright for the gunk. I''ve sanded it with 120,220 and 400 sandpaper so far. I need to go back down to some lower grits and work my way up. There are some deeper scratched I want to see if I can get out.

Scales are rough cut. Sanding them is tedious, need toget a belt grinder... partial full tang is kind of a pain. I'll get it licked. Just depends on work load at work.

Thanks. I've heard of people forcing patinas with lemon juice, but not cleaning. Guess you don't leave it on too long?

It is wiped off with the scothbrite pad near right away. It is just a weak acid. If you ever want to clean off a patina acid does it! Just wipe it off quick and neutralize it. Granted the light patinas that form from use are more than worth it.

That set of scales just died. Dropped one on the concrete while sanding. It was going to be so lovely... Back to the drawing board.

Gah! That's unfortunate, John. Those were nice looking scales.

I may be able to glue it all together on a different project if the handle matches another tang... Wishful Thinking I know. I'll try to knock out another set of scales on this week's day off if I can wake up not needing an Aleve.
