Kitchen Acquisitions

Discussion in 'Food and Drink' started by Andy, Feb 25, 2014.

  1. I tried to tidy my tidgy kitch up a bit and I put a couple of useful gadgets neatly away. You don`t want to see my kitchen drawer - I`ve got no space anywhere - in drawers, on the wall and on the bench. The first piccy is kitchen drawer chaos - I can`t find anything in it ! The next second piccy is my two cleavers/caidaos with holes finally on the wall - the one on the left is a 25 year old heavy stainless Ikea chopper that cost £5.On the far left of the wall rack is a 12" Sheffield Egglestone dual cut steel which is terrific for my little knife collection.Oh I just realised I have five ladles and four spud mashers ! The brown wooden-handled one on the right is a shiny bargain Kiwi stainless Chinese vegetable knife bought for a song - £15 or something. The third image is scissors for every job - 3 pairs of Sheffield and vintage Solingen pinking shears, some brown handled curved Japanese leather scissors, The big heavy ones with the orange handles are forged carbon and can cut sheet steel etc, the secateurs are clean and kitchen-only for mad tough things. My fourth picture is a stainless rare Skyline side-handled hand whisk from 1942 - 80 years old which still works flawlessly is really fast on beaten eggs and a doddle to clean (unlike electric stick whisks like Braun 160 watt ones) plus it gives you a mini work-out too! I bought it for £8 quid total bargain.Of course you all know that stainless steel was invented in Sheffield about 110 years ago by an English guy ( forget his name. ) KITCHEN DRAWER CHAOS.jpg 80 YEAR OLD HAND WHISK.jpg SCISSORS FOR EVERY JOB.jpg CHOPPERS ON THE WALL.jpg

That’s what my kitchen drawers look like! And for some reason the measuring cups get moved every month it seems. They have been in no less than 4 drawers so far. It’s infuriating.

    Nice job organizing things!

  3. Thanks Toothpick - it is difficult when you`ve got a tiny kitch with no room to store things properly.
I have never measured any ingredients or timed my cooking - I just know when things are done. Also I have never done recipes or read a cookbook. My chefy friends say I am a natural cook and they never get the same meal twice!
I cook for hundreds of homeless people five/six days a week which is immensely satisfying. It is a mixture of Southern Indian vegetarian for the Hare Kryshna - Food for Life van and anything in the cupboard hot on a plate for my local Church of England vicar.

  4. Scissors are really just two knife blades together - haha!

I have been into knives and scissors since I was a kid in the seventies but I had no idea what scissors I had until I rounded them all up recently. It`s a 50 year collection.

My recent acquisitions are the 20 inch long - 12 inch blade - 3 lb monster scissors, two good quality carbon steel models and some smaller ones.I had a bit of a collection before but now I have some more scissors on order - so I have one for a few different jobs - haha!

I have tin snips, hairdressing scissors, kitchen ones, ceremonial ones, tailor ones, pinking shears, surgical scissors, aramid/kevlar , optic fibre cutting shears, floristry scissors - allsorts.

Is there anybody else here that likes scissors ? - they are so useful - I use the bright yellow handle carbon steel ones every day.
