KKFora Passaround?

Discussion in 'CJA Edged Art / Scorpion Forge' started by CrisAnderson27, Jul 29, 2014.

  1. Me too, though I've never been a part of one...I think it's a wonderful thing for all involved. I mean, I've heard some serious horror stories lol....but I know none of that nonsense will happen around here. You guys are just too awesome...

...and I've still got my hammer.

    :D

  3. Updated list!

I also wanted to clarify (I've received a few PM's on the topic) that the order of this list is of course going to change once the knife is finished. We'll figure out who lives where, and ship the knife in a way that makes sense :).

Thanks again everyone! I'm really looking forward to getting all of your feedback!

  5. Some good news, and bad news. Oddly enough, they're the same news lol. This is happening...soon. I finished the polish work on a 265mm gyuto today...48mm on the heel. Unfortunately...there are three odd longitudinal cracks in the soft spine of the blade, on the left side. Unfortunately for me, this means the blade is basically a failure, as it can't be sold that way. However, it's still a fully functional blade. I did NOT put the same finish effort into it (I simply can't afford to with no income from the knife), but it is in general very representative of my work. A bit thicker behind the edge (most of my edge refinement is done in the polishing stages...much like a Japanese sword)...and there are definite marks left from each progressive grit past 600 grit lol...but it's still going to be a beautiful cutter. I'll be handling it tomorrow, and using it for a week or so here before cleaning it up and sending it to the first person on the list.

If you're here and still interested, please send me a PM with your real name, phone number, and address so I can start working out an itinerary for the blade.

Thanks guys!! Honestly I'm sort of relieved this happened. I've wanted to get a test blade out to you guys for a long time now!

    ETA~

    Pictures to come here shortly!

will the knife get a one solid piece wa handle or some kind of rediculous burl thing like usual?

    Yeah... definitely scrap pine :D

  11. Just wrap the handle in duct tape.

Make it food service safe so I don't have to hide it when the health department shows up is really all we ask :D

  13. haha in that case just stick a new hotdog on the end every day. Disposable handles.

  14. Lol...you guys are on a roll here...:D.

I'm sure I'll do something interesting for it like normal...as I may end up with the thing myself :p. I've had a ton of interest in buying it...but I'm just not sure I can bring myself to let one of my knives out that is flawed. The cracks are very disappointing to me...both financially and aesthetically lol. But like I said, I'm glad it's allowing me to finally send one out to you all.

Soooo....for those of you who haven't seen yet...here's some pictures:

As usual, the pictures don't do it much justice. But you can see it's a clean and rather beautiful blade.

Annnnd the cracks!! They are only on one side as you can see.

I'm going to be doing some work on a nakiri refinish, and do the initial grinding on the ko-gyuto that went with this today. I also have to get down to the post office to get Anton's petty mailed! At some point...probably late tonight...I'd like to start on whatever I decide on for a handle on this thing. Maybe some of Mark's maple burl with a simple thick/thin (4mm/1mm) copper spacer arrangement? Who knows...but I'll keep this thread updated as I go for sure.

Sweet. Edge-up on the name side looks like moon over Guilin.

  17. Anytime! Thanks to you guys for the interest!!

    Love your references man, lol.

To all of you who have sent me addresses, I need phone numbers too, please! To those who haven't yet...the sooner the better. I'm trying to work out a path for the thing, based on distance (I'll mail to the farthest person) so it works its way back to me. Having your info is kinda critical to you getting the knife as well :D.

Ha, I forgot there was a "moon hill" in Guilin. More generic landscape:

  19. Ahh!! Absolutely!! That little circle, in hand...absolutely looks like a half moon as well. Even better reference!!

  20. Cris, what's so bad about those cracks (other than dissapoint you)? I mean on the photos they aren't appears as something that looks ugly. In fact, they are not easy to spot if you aren't looking for them. And unless those cracks are alive and start breeding I don't see any real reasons for being so upset with them. So I guess I'm missing something.

    P.s. love those Guilin pictures
